How to Elope in Grand Teton National Park

Step 1 - Get Your Permit

To legally elope in the park, you’ll need a Wedding and Commitment Ceremony Special Use Permit from the National Park Service. There are two types of permits to choose from:

  • Reserved Site-Specific Ceremony Permit: This option allows you to reserve one of the park’s designated ceremony locations, such as Schwabacher Landing or Mormon Row. You’ll have exclusive use of that location for your ceremony time window, which helps ensure a smooth, uninterrupted experience.

  • Small Dispersed Ceremony Permit: Perfect for smaller groups of 12 people or fewer, this permit allows you to elope in a general scenic area that’s not on the official ceremony site list. These ceremonies are designed to be short and simple and must not block access or interfere with other park visitors.

Both permit types cost $200, and it’s a good idea to apply at least 4 to 6 weeks ahead of your desired date. You can submit your application through the Grand Teton NPS website. When you work with me, I’ll help you determine which permit best fits your vision and guide you through the process.

Step 2 - Choose a Ceremony Location

There are specific approved ceremony spots within the park. Each one offers something different in terms of lighting, views, and accessibility. I help all my couples choose the right fit based on your vision and comfort level.

Step 3 - Get Your Marriage License

You will need to visit the Teton County Clerk’s Office in Jackson, Wyoming. There is no waiting period. Bring your IDs and $30. You can even pick it up the day before your ceremony.

Step 5 - Respect the Land

Schwabacher Landing

This is one of the most iconic sunrise locations in the park. The stillness of the Snake River reflects the Tetons perfectly and the light in the early morning is soft and golden.

Mormon Row Historic District

With its rustic barns and panoramic mountain views, Mormon Row is perfect for couples who want a Western feel. It is one of the most photographed areas in the park for a reason.

String Lake

This peaceful alpine lake is tucked into a forest with beautiful views and crystal-clear water. Great for couples looking for a quiet, nature-filled elopement.

Jenny Lake Overlook

If you are looking for stunning panoramic views with less hiking, this overlook is a great option. You can also take a boat shuttle across the lake and hike to waterfalls for portraits.

Snake River Overlook

This location was made famous by Ansel Adams. It features the winding river with the Tetons rising behind it. A very cinematic spot for couples wanting something grand and dramatic.

Blacktail Ponds Overlook

A more private spot with a mix of water, meadows, and mountains. It feels wild and intimate and usually has fewer people than other scenic stops.

Delta Lake

Bridger-Teton National Forest

Just outside the park, this area offers similar views without needing a permit. It is quieter and more flexible, perfect for couples wanting more privacy and freedom.

Teton Valley, Idaho

This area gives you a stunning view of the Tetons from the western side. It is less crowded than the park and has amazing spots like Grand Targhee Resort where you can take a gondola to the top of the mountain.

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort

A more luxurious option for couples wanting upscale lodging with access to mountain views. You can take the tram or gondola to the summit and say your vows with the Tetons behind you.

National Elk Refuge

Especially gorgeous in winter, this wide open landscape has rolling hills and views of the mountains. You may even see herds of elk during your elopement.
